LG Refrigerator May Be Equipped With Defective Linear Compressor

Consumers who purchased LG refrigerators are alleging that the products are equipped with linear compressor defects.

The alleged defect causes failure of the refrigerator’s linear compressor—a central component responsible for cooling. The linear compressor defect may render the LG Refrigerators unable to perform their most basic function: cooling and preserving food and beverages.

When the compressor defect manifests, the refrigerator warms and its contents spoil, unless the contents are moved to a working refrigerator or cooler. Although LG previously settled a class action alleging its refrigerators are defective, all claims in that case were limited to those involving purchases before January 29, 2014.

When consumers who have allegedly made warranty claims for malfunctioning LG Refrigerators, LG has not replaced them with working units or offered refunds. Instead, LG has allegedly attempted futile repairs or replaced defective compressors with other defective compressors—a practice that, for many, has resulted in repeated refrigerator failures.
