Nissan North America, Inc. allegedly sold vehicles with defective transmissions. Consumers allege that 2013–2014 Nissan Altima vehicles contain defective variable automatic transmissions, which could lead to stalling, shuddering, and premature transmission failure. When the shuddering occurs, the rate of speed drops or the vehicle stalls, and the brake lights do not work. Nissan allegedly knew the transmissions were defective but continued to misrepresent the safety risk the vehicles pose to owners and the public.
